X-ray Spectroscopy of Highly Charged Ions - Basic Processes
During the ionization processes in the ion trap the produced ions can be detected by their characteristic x-ray emission.
Direct Excitation (DE) as well as Radiative Recombination (RR) processes occur at all electron beam energies.
Additionally, at selected electron energies Dielectronic Recombination (DR) processes appear resonantly.
Direct Excitation
An electron from the electron beam excites or ionizes an inner shell
electron of a HCI. The created vacancy is then filled by an electron
from an outer shell through emission of a photon with corresponding energy.
Radiative Recombination
An electron from the electron beam is directly captured into an open shell of an ion followed by emission of a photon whose
energy is the sum of the electron beam energy and the binding energy of the shell where the electron is captured.
Dielectronic Recombination
An electron from the electron beam is captured into an open shell of an ion, exciting an inner shell electron if the
energy of the captured electron is equal to the energy that is needed to move an inner shell electron into a higher shell.
This resonant electron capture process can be observed only at certain electron beam energies.
The created vacancy is then filled by the excited electron or an electron from an outer shell through emission of
a photon with corresponding energy.
