Principle of Operation:
The Wien filter is a charged particle separator with a crossed electric and magnetic field configuration (E x B) based on velocity separation. The ion species of interest with a specific velocity passes the Wien filter straightforward by properly adjusted electric and magnetic fields. All other species are suppressed. The Wien filter is characterized by a high dispersion at small overall dimensions.
Specifications:
The Wien filter has a mass and charge state resolution* of:
>40 (1.0mm aperture)
>80 (0.5mm aperture)
at typical ion source parameter (5kV).
* A mass and charge state resolution of 40 means the separation of monoisotopic xenon up to the charge state 40. Hence a monoisotopic xenon beam consisting of a mixture of charge states (e.g. Xe10+ up to Xe40+) can be separated into the specific partial beams. The same applies for isotopes with different masses. A smaller aperture at the entrance and exit of the filter results in a higher resolution with the acceptance of lower beam transmission (transmission coefficient <<1) and therefore a higher loss of beam intensity. Hence the aperture size should be always a trade-off between necessary resolution and maximum beam transmission.
Neither mass/charge state resolution nor transmission are constant over the mass, charge state and energy range.
