For creating strong magnetic fields in the EBIT-3 permanent magnets are used. These magnets are made from a material named SmCo. The manufacturer gives guarantee for proper use up to temperatures of about 100°C. In case of service the ion source has to be heatet and temperatures will increase up to values higher than the given limitation. In consequence, the magnets will be damaged. Thus, in case of maintenance the ion source,
the magnets have to be removed out of the heated area.
Installing the extractor device
While servicing the ion source, the extractor device has to be set up on the frame. Be careful that the axis of the extractor aligns with the axis of the beam. The lower aluminium profile has to be in contact with the baseplate of the source and is fixed by for chevrons.
Dismounting the magnet
After disassembling the source attach the two bolts by screwing in the magnet. After putting the distance tube over the cathode assembly, the extractor has to be moved to the magnet and fixed by two knurled screws.
By turning the handwheel clockwise the magnet will be detached. When it’s completely
detached move the whole extractor in the rear end position and fix it whith the two star grip screws.
Extraction-sided magnet
After removing the pole plates from the source, begin to detache the devided magnet on the extraction side. Hereunto the mounting tool is fixed on the frame.
By turning the crank, the tool will approach the first half of the magnet. After reaching it fix it with the bolt. Now turn the crank anticlockwise and remove the first half. When it has reached an adequate distance pull the bolt and remove the magnet from the tool.
For removing the second half turn it on the cylinder by 180 degree and disassemble it like the first half.
